Rickshaw pullers have no safety net — what happens when they get old or injured?

N
by Nasif Sajjad

My uncle pulled rickshaws in Dhaka for 22 years. Last year he had an accident — a bus hit him at an intersection in Mohakhali. Broken leg, three weeks in hospital. Those three weeks: no income. No insurance. No sick pay. Nothing. His family back in Jamalpur nearly starved. His wife sold her gold earrings. His eldest son dropped out of school to work. When my uncle recovered and came back to Dhaka, the rickshaw owner told him his spot had been taken. He had to start over from nothing. This man contributed to this city for over two decades. He carried ministers and students and office workers through rain and heat. He kept this city moving. And the system offers him absolutely nothing in return. There are an estimated 800,000 to 1 million rickshaw pullers in Dhaka alone. Not one of them has access to formal social protection. I am not an economist or a policy expert. But surely there is a way to build some basic safety net for these workers? Even a small contribution to a fund? Some form of accident insurance? Does anyone know if any organisation is working on this? Or is there any government initiative I am not aware of?
