I left a government job for a startup and my relatives still have not forgiven me
Two years ago I resigned from my BCS position. I had cleared the exam on my second attempt — something my entire extended family celebrated like a wedding. My mother cried happy tears. My father distributed sweets to the neighbours. Then I quit. I joined a startup working on agri-tech for small farmers. The salary was less than half. No pension, no government perks, no sir from anyone. The reaction from my relatives was something I was not prepared for. My chacha stopped talking to me for six months. At every family gathering, some uncle would ask loudly so the government job did not work out? as if I had been fired. My mother got sympathy calls from relatives who treated it like a death in the family. Two years later, our startup has helped over 3,000 farmers get better prices for their crops. We just raised our first round of funding. I am doing the most meaningful work of my life. My relatives are slowly coming around. Last Eid, my chacha asked me to explain what a startup is. I think that is progress.
